What to Do
Canon City is truly one of the many hidden gems of the Rockies with a lot of unique features. The Arkansas river is the most frequently rafted river in the United States. Enjoy one of the local rafting companies, some with adrenalin rushing rapids, or on your own at the newest feature of the Whitewater and Kayak Recreation Park located next to Centennial Park.
Skyline Drive is one of the most remarkable driveways in the world. Built in 1903 by prison inmates, this limestone ridge (called a hogback) rises 800 feet above the surrounding valley and offers a panoramic view of Canon City, the Wet Mountain and the Arkansas Valley. It also boasts a dinosaur trackway discovered in 1999. Skyline Drive is a one-way public highway and a FREE attraction provided by the City of Canon City.
The Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Canon City is quite enchanting. The eighty buildings included, located within approximately five blocks along Main Street, form a continuous, cohesive grouping that reflects the development of Canon City as a regional commercial center. The buildings express a quality of design and richness of detail which defines the district as the best collection of late 19th and early 20th century commercial structures in the county.
Canon City is home to several museums. The Dinosaur Depot Museum featuring some local artifacts and a wonderful interactive area for young children to discover their own dinosaur bones. The Fremont Center for the Arts has monthly gallery exhibits, a permanent art collection, an extensive art library and gift shop, all located in the historic post office. The Royal Gorge Regional History Museum is a research library offering family files, newspaper microfilm, oral histories, photographs and archives. The Museum of Colorado Prisons boasts an audio guided tour through 32 cells of exhibits located throughout the historic 1935 women's facility. Continue your adventure on the Museums Ghost Walk through historic downtown lead by a guide in period costume highlighting the architecture, ghost stories and legendary features of the area.
If you're up for some adventure you might want to ride along 9 amazing ziplines spanning over 1 mile. Take a helicopter tour through the gorge or ride ATV's on some amazing outdoor trails. You can ride the Skycoaster while inside the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park exploring one of the worlds highest suspension bridges at 1053 feet above the river.
For some slower paced activities you might enjoy fishing in the Arkansas river or taking a two hour trip on the Route Railroad through the gorge. Spend time on a horseback ride to enjoy the spectacular views of the Royal Gorge area or sample wine from a local winery. Stroll along the Riverwalk to enjoy local nature and scenery.
If exploring is something the interests you, there are several scenic drives in the area. North of Canon City is the "Gold Belt Tour", where one leg of the route travels the old railroad bed inside Phantom Canyon, the second leg travels the old stagecoach line on Shelf Road with it's sheer drop off at the very edge of the road. For the more sedate route, the third traverses along High Park Road through todays ranchlands. All roads will lead to and from the historic town of Cripple Creek. South of Canon City you can travel into the San Isabel National Forest as part of the "Frontier Pathway Tour" and visit Bishop Castle, a one of a kind 16th century castle built by one man. Continue your travel into the small mountain communities of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff to explore their settlement history of the area.
