First Friday Artist's Reception
Celebrate Spring and the Arts on First Friday! The Artists’ Gallery, in Historic Downtown Cañon City, is flinging open its doors to Spring on “First Friday”, April 5th, from 5 to 8 p.m. We welcome you to join us for a community evening of art, hospitality and entertainment! Our Featured Artists for the month: Cathey Young’s deep reverence for the beauty of Colorado is revealed in her wonderfully luminous oil paintings. She is inspired by the serenity of nature, particularly the light playing off water; the shadows and reflections mesmerize her. This year, Cathey will present a theme-based display of her paintings of bridges and waterfalls. She explains, “My life has included many transitions this past year, thus, my attraction to bridges—a yearning to keep connections with the past, while looking to what awaits on the other side. The waterfalls represent an element of danger and beauty in their downward descent.” Russian-born artist, Svetlana Piltingsrud, always had a penchant for creating art. Upon moving to Florence, Colorado in 2001, she was further influenced by her American husband’s creative and artistic family. Under the guidance of a motivating and talented art instructor, she came to the realization that she really wanted to be an artist! The inspiration for her modern folk art-style figurative paintings, come from cherished memories of her Grandmother’s modest rural home and garden near St. Petersburg. Svetlana’s distinctive technique, painting characters without faces, serves her purpose of simplification and minimizing the image to the core. She explains, “Only action is important, not the emotion dictated by facial expression. This leaves the viewer room for imagination.” Potter, Patty Rico, states, “As an artist working with clay, I consider my studio a place of creativity and new beginnings. I look forward to reaching a diverse audience through a wide variety of pieces, including pots that are decorative, small and large, or abstract with a rustic appeal.” Patty’s theme for her Featured Artist display this year is, “Serve Up Life with Style!”—focusing on pots that are designed for serving and entertaining. “All of my vessels are functional and will last for generations. So, go ahead, serve up life with style!” Paper artist, Dakota Rogers, will be conducting a free "Make & Take" designer greeting card mini-class during the evening from 5:30 to 7:30. Dakota will supply all materials and instruction needed to create your one-of-a-kind card with the sentiment of your choice! Join in the fun! Enjoy live music performed by guitarist/singer, Tom Gudding, and complimentary refreshments served by the artists themselves!
